PRESERVING CUSTOM TEXT WRAP SHAPES WHEN REPLACING GRAPHICS.
When you delete a PageMaker graphic you delete any text wrap boundary associated with it as well. Thus if you want to reimport a graphic after modifying it in a drawing program, or substitute one graphic for another, you have to recreate any custom-shaped text wrap boundaries that were attached to the original graphic. Here is how you can exchange graphics while keeping the original text wrap boundary --

  1. Select the graphic you are replacing;
  2. Choose "Place" from the "File" menu;
  3. In the "Place" dialogue box --
    1. Select the substitute graphic you want to import;
    2. Select the "Replace entire graphic" mode from the list of place options; and
    3. Click the "OK" button.

The new graphic will appear in place of the original with the original text wrap boundary attached to it.

SETTING LINE AND FILL ATTRIBUTES.
When drawing a line or shape in PageMaker, it is usually better to draw the object first, then set its line and fill properties. Specifying such properties before you draw changes the default settings for the current document, so that all new objects drawn in the document will be given those properties. Obviously if you intend to use the same settings for a series of objects, you may want to make them the default before you draw.

RESETTING RULER ORIGIN.
The default position of the zero-zero point on PageMaker's rulers is at the upper left corner of the page. To return it to this location, just double click on the thin dotted lines that appear at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical rulers in the upper right corner of the window.

COLORIZING IMAGES.
You can bring a gray-scale image that was created in Photoshop into PageMaker and colorize the object in PageMaker. The result will be a monochromatic image with it's original values intact (the original percentage of shading will be translated into a percentage of color) and the image will be ready for offset printing.

PAGE NUMBERS.
When adding page numbers to a PageMaker document, there are some keyboard shortcuts that are useful. While on the master page and with the text tool selected, pressing Control-Shift-3 (windows) or Option-Command-P will add a LM and RM to the master pages. These codes translate into page numbers on the pages of your document.

CREATING A MULTI-COLOR LINE.
To make a multi-color line, create two lines that are exactly one on top of the other and make the upper line thinner and a different color. Here is how to do it --

  1. Create the thicker line or box, and assign it the desired thickness and color,
  2. Paste an exact duplicate on top of this object by copying the original and choosing "Multiple Paste" ("Edit" menu). In the dialogue box that appears, specify one copy and horizontal and vertical offsets of zero.
  3. Without deselecting, specify the desired color and thickness for the thinner line.
  4. Initially the thinner line will align with the outer edge of the thicker one. To make it align with the center --
    1. If it is a line, simply move it.
    2. If it is a box, reduce its width and height by an amount equal to the difference between the thickness of the two lines. You can do so in the Control Palette by clicking after the entried in the H and W boxes and entering a minus sign and the desired amount of reduction stated in "0pX" notation, where "X" equals the amount of the reduction in points. Then to center the two boxes, select them both and use the "Align Objects" command ("Arrange" menu).
