GENERAL

Web Workshop.
Formerly known as the SiteBuilder Network, the MSDN Online Web Workshop page links to a library of web authoring support that includes the latest articles, downloads and general information.
World Wide Web FAQ.
Open FAQs on web authoring topics including web browsers and CGI Programming by Thomas Boutell and various other authors. Also contains Thomas Boutell's nearly book-length original document with somewhat dated answers to questions about the World Wide Web.
Web Developer's Virtual Library.
Very extensive site containing articles on all aspects of developing a web site and links to other sites with useful resources.
HTML Reference Manual.
Very comprehensive reference from Sandia Labs on the current status of HTML. Includes an HTML Elements List containing detailed descriptions of all existing and proposed HTML mark-up tags.
Webmaster Reference Library.
An excellent compilation of links to everything you need to know to develop and maintain an web site, from HTML coding to CGI scripting and designing efficient graphics.

GRAPHICS

Image Efficiency.
Tips and tutorial from the Bandwidth Conservation Society. Site contains information about image size and color depth, side-by-side comparison of the same image in various formats, and tutorial on creating efficient yet attractive images with Adobe Photoshop.
Using Graphics with Netscape.
Technical information from the folks at Netscape about optimizing the viewing of graphics through Netscape Navigator and other browsers. Discussion centers more on file formats and use of HTML extensions than color depth, which is covered by the Bandwidth Conservation Society.
Optimizing Web Graphics.
Detailed and excellent article by Andrew King of Webreference covering color palettes used by different systems, tips for reducing file size, tips on use of type in graphics, specific tips for optimizing graphics and references for further reading.
ColorMix.
Allows Web designers to expand on the 216-color Netscape palette by combining two or even three "Web-safe" hues.
Netscape Colors.
Explanation of how computers define and display color for the creation of web pages. Excellent discussion of which colors do not dither in Netscape. Includes links to other resources and articles.
GIF Animation.
Detailed explanation by Royal E. Frazier of how to create animated GIF files. Site includes samples and links to all resources necessary to create animated graphics.

PAGE DESIGN

Web Style Manual.
Extensive on-line guide to designing and creating web pages from the Yale Center for Advanced Instructional Media. Includes an overview of the world-wide web, basic design concepts as applied to web pages, examples of HTML coding for specific page structures, and discussion of optimizing performance.

NEWSGROUPS

HTML Authoring.
Primary topic here is proper HTML coding. Often a good place to learn what HTML constructions other web authors are using on their pages (news:comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html).
Web Graphics.
Very active group for discussion of topics concerning optimization of graphics for use on web pages (news:comp.infosystems.www.authoring.images).
