These directories and search engines can help you find your way on the Internet.

DIRECTORIES

Yahoo. Since you are on the Internet, you probably already know about Yahoo, one of the oldest and most extensive directories of the world-wide web. This searchable directory is organized by topic. And if a search doesn't turn up what you want in Yahoo's directories, you can have Yahoo's software forward the search directly to one of several other Internet search sites.

N.Y. Times Navigator. Part of The New York Times' excellent web site. This page is billed as the starting point to web navigation for the Times' own journalists. It contains an extensive collection of links to government sites, journalistic resources and other web directories. Registration is required to use this site.

Clearinghouse Directory of Internet Resource Guides. Like the catalogue in a research library, this site contains a directory of guides to other Internet resources. An excellent resource for research in specialized fields of knowledge.

Yahoo Computing provides annotated links to several hundred web sites relating to the computer industry. Each site is reviewed so you know what to expect if you go to it.

SEARCH ENGINES

Alta Vista. Compaq's huge index of web sites. They say it indexes over 30 million Web pages. Generally provides fast and accuate searches, but since the database is so large, you may need to refine your search to locate the specific information you want.

InterNIC WHOIS. This is where you can find out who owns the domain names (e.g. "someone.com") of the websites you visit. InterNIC is the organization that provides domain name registration services for the Internet.

GENERAL REFERENCE

Bell Atlantic's Interactive Yellow Pages lets you search by name for businesses listed in the Yellow Pages, which makes it a great tool for finding businesses for which you know the name, but not location. You can also search by subject, much as you would in the printed Yellow Pages.

ZIP Code Lookup. For when you are sending mail the old-fashioned way, look up ZIP+4 codes on-line.
